GOVERNOR DESANTIS ANNOUNCES NEW GRANT PROGRAM AT NW FLORIDA COLLEGE

Yesterday, Governor Ron DeSantis announced that $2.8 million will be awarded to Northwest Florida State College through the Florida Job Growth Grant Fund. This grant will specifically be funding a new diesel mechanic technician training program. It is great to see that grants are going towards job creation and technical skills training in Florida’s First District! 

Demand for diesel service technicians and mechanics will only increase in Walton and Okaloosa counties over the coming years, so this grant is coming at the right time. Specifically, the Florida Job Growth Grant Fund award will support Northwest Florida State College’s existing Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) program. Training will assist individuals in developing skills that are in demand and will result in multiple industry-recognized credentials, including Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification.

Thank you, Governor DeSantis, for supporting the investment in infrastructure, which will continue to elevate Northwest Florida and Florida’s rural communities!

UNITED STATES COAST GUARD SAVES AMERICAN LIVES

It is essential to recognize and express gratitude for our armed services. Yesterday, 23 miles south of Destin Pass, Florida, Coast Guard watchstanders were alerted of an 11-year-old boy experiencing an allergic reaction while aboard a fishing vessel. Both a Coast Guard MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew and  a 45-foot response Boat-Medium crew from Destin were able to respond immediately. The ATC Mobile helicopter crew transported the child and parent back to Coast Guard Station Destin where the child was transferred to emergency medical services personnel. 

Thanks to the prompt response of the Coast Guard, this individual was able to get essential treatment. My thoughts and prayers go out to this family, I hope that your son is feeling much better and remains in stable condition. I also thank the Coast Guard for coordinating this medevac. Commander Christopher Miller said it best, “This is an example of the Coast Guard’s remarkable ability to respond at any given moment.”

SAVE THE EVERGLADES

I am proud to cosign a letter authored by Congressman Darren Soto (FL-09) urging President Biden to deny any operations permits to advance new oil drilling sites within the Everglades. Oil is a necessary component in the American and global economy, but not at the expense of the Florida Everglades. In fact, Congress is already spending billions in the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Act to preserve the Everglades. Allowing oil drilling here would be counterproductive to this already-funded congressional program.
