Dear John,

Unprecedented increases in gun sales, combined with economic distress and social isolation due to COVID-19, are intensifying the country’s gun violence crisis and more often than not this violence starts at home. In fact, every 16 hours in America, a woman is shot and killed by a current or former dating partner.

Next Thursday, October 21st, is #PurpleThursday, a national day of action for Domestic Violence Awareness month. Brady will host a survivor-centered discussion to address the intersection of domestic violence and firearms. We hope you’ll join Brady for this important discussion.

Join Brady’s Vice President of Organizing Maisha Fields as she interviews a panel of survivors and leaders in the movement to end domestic violence, including Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-MI-12), Author & Activist Kate Ranta, Certified Advocate Against Domestic Violence, Pauletta Perez, and Public Policy Chair of United Way of Southeast, Louisiana Kim Sport. This conversation will center the lived experience of survivors and leaders who have successfully advocated for change as we forward a solutions-oriented discussion on what you can do to help prevent gun violence by intimate partners.

More than half of all mass shootings in the past decade have been related to domestic or family violence and one out of every three women murdered in 2016 was killed by an intimate partner with a gun. Moreover, the chance of being murdered by an abusive partner increases by 500% when there is a gun in the home.

Your engagement is absolutely critical as we work to have the conversations we need to help end gun violence and domestic violence in our communities. Thanks for taking action alongside Brady.

In solidarity,
Team Brady
