Friends,
South Carolina isn’t immune to the racial and criminal justice issues our country as a whole has been reckoning with recently. It’s happening here too and we have to speak up.
Six years ago in North Charleston, Walter Scott, a Black man, was gunned down by a police officer after being pulled over for a broken brake light.
In my home Senate district just a few months ago, a young Black man was walking down the street when he was accosted by an angry white man… then, pushed, demeaned, and publicly humiliated. He was considered “lucky” to only walk away with a broken phone and a broken spirit.
People are treated as a threat for simply living their lives — for living while Black, driving while Black, jogging while Black.
I’m calling on SC’s leaders to stand up and speak out. Their silence is killing us.
I’m making criminal justice reform and racial equity a cornerstone of my campaign for governor, by hosting conversations and creating plans to help us build a state we can all be proud of. If you agree with my campaign priorities, please sign my petition demanding change in SC to show your support for criminal justice reforms that will save lives.
Thank you for speaking up alongside me,
— Mia
