CINEMA J: A Crime on the Bayou
Thursday, November 4 I 7:00 PM | $12 | Bender JCC Kreeger Auditorium

“A Crime on the Bayou” is a poignant yet inspiring true story about allyship and justice, where Richard Sobol, a young Jewish attorney, defends an unjustly accused Black teen in this landmark Civil Rights-era case. At a time of national reckoning over racial inequality, Emmy-winning documentarian Nancy Buirski presents a potent argument for the power of individual action to promote social change.

Following the JCC screening, Meredith Weisel, Senior Associate Regional Director of ADL Washington, D.C., will moderate a distinguished panel featuring Rabbi Adam Raskin, of Congregation Har Shalom, and Montgomery County Councilmember Will Jawando. We hope you will join us for this timely discussion concerning racial injustice and the role the Jewish community plays.

The Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association (CSPOA) and Richard Mack: How Extremists Are Successfully Infiltrating Law Enforcement
The Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association (CSPOA) is a large anti-government extremist group whose primary purpose it is to spread anti-government propaganda to, and recruit from, law enforcement personnel, especially county sheriffs and sheriff’s deputies. The group was founded in 2011 by Richard Mack, a former sheriff of Graham County, Arizona, who has used CSPOA as a vehicle to gain stature and influence within both the far right and the mainstream right. Although the

Oath Keepers , another anti-government extremist group that recruits from law enforcement, have garnered more media attention in recent years, the CSPOA has arguably had more success infiltrating law enforcement, including at the executive level.

What’s Wrong with Transparency Reporting (and How to Fix It)
We know that social media platforms play a large role in spreading hate speech, racism and misinformation. Transparency reports are supposed to track platforms’ enforcement of their content moderation rules. Ideally, such reporting forces platforms to be explicit about their policies on hate, harassment and misinformation, and apply their rules consistently.

Instead, platforms’ transparency reports have failed to provide meaningful information about the prevalence and impact of hateful content. These reports are confusing, uninformative and evasive. Platform transparency reports end up serving as a deflection away from the fact that we have very little insight into how platforms manage the ecosystem of hate online—and they have little to no legal or financial incentives to give us that access.

Data Leak Appears to Reveal 133 Oath Keepers with Ties to U.S. Military
On September 27, 2021, the non-profit journalist collective Distributed Denial of Secrets (DDoSecrets) uploaded a cache of data allegedly linked to the Oath Keepers, a far-right anti-government militia. This data included logs from the group’s private chatroom on Rocketchat, its emails from January 13 to September 19, 2021 and alleged membership information for more than 38,000 individuals. A review of these membership rolls found that 133 people provided emails with the “.mil” suffix, indicating a military association, while others alleged elsewhere in the document that they were currently serving in the military.

For Twitter Users, Gab’s Toxic Content Is Just a Click Away
Since 2020, Twitter has taken steps to decrease hate and disinformation on its platform, officially banning some forms of Covid-19 misinformation or purging QAnon-related handles after the January 6, 2021, Capitol insurrection. But while Twitter’s anti-extremist policies are more effective now than they were a year ago, the platform has not addressed the ease with which users are able to drive traffic to hate and misinformation hosted on outside sites.

Rise Above Movement (R.A.M.)-inspired “Active Clubs” have cropped up across the United States. This development signals a renewed effort from R.A.M. to rebrand and spread their influence with a focus on real-world white supremacist activism.

These Active Clubs embrace white supremacist ideology and members consider themselves vigilante soldiers standing guard against a perceived existential threat to their “white future.” Motivated by the white supremacist
