Hey there --
Last week, as Frances Haugen testified in front of the Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Consumer Protection, we were doing our best to keep up with all the incredible internal research she was presenting from Facebook.
And then you wouldn’t believe what happened to us on Twitter. Facebook’s Policy Communications Director, Andy Stone, fired back at one of our tweets:
As Frances Haugen shared with the subcommittee, one internal study from Facebook found that the company only removes 3-5% of hate speech. We tweeted out this piece of data from Facebook’s own internal researchers, but Andy Stone apparently wasn’t buying it.
Amazingly, Andy Stone is disputing findings from Facebook’s own internal researchers. We’re not going to let him get away with more lies. Facebook has repeatedly hidden their internal data, manipulated the truth, and then lied to the public and Congress. We’re not going to take him seriously If he wants to twist more of Facebook’s own research for another PR stunt.
We know that Facebook cannot be trusted. Facebook will stop at nothing to hide the truth to protect their toxic business model and its profits, even if that means inciting another insurrection or genocide.
We’re going to keep calling out Facebook’s harms and advocating for structural reforms to our information ecosystem. One tweet won’t scare us away. But we’re up against some powerful companies. Last week, Facebook launched a million-dollar television ad campaign in D.C. to protect their reputation. We must fight back. Chip in now to help us expand our campaign and paid budgets in the weeks ahead.
Because of supporters like you, Facebook is finally feeling the heat. We’re just getting started.
Thanks for all your support,
