Emergency Mobilization for Housing

Today, Friday, October 15th from 3:30pm-5:00pm EST

Join Zoom Meeting: https://nationalhomeless.zoom.us/j/82766936168

Please join us at 3:30pm EST TODAY to discuss how we in the social and economic justice community can rapidly mobilize to prevent the possibility of deep cuts to the $300 billion affordable housing investment provisions in President Biden’s “Build Back Better” Infrastructure Bill, as well as prevent a wave of homelessness due to eviction.

Every Democrat on the House Financial Services Committee urged President Biden, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer to protect the historic investment in affordable housing, and much needed renovations of severely dilapidated public housing. We know there are millions of unhoused Americans who are living in homeless shelters, bus terminals, or “doubled up” with family members or friends. Millions of unhoused Americans need access to safe and decent affordable housing, especially the homeless and those living in public housing. Clearly, affordable housing is “critical infrastructure,” especially during a pandemic in which more than 11 million people are at risk of being evicted.

Rep. Maxine Waters, Chair of the House Financial Services Committee wrote, “It is abundantly clear that we will need long term, equitable measures to help families recover from the effects of the pandemic, by investing in housing stabilization, job creation, and increased economic opportunity.”

At risk of being on the chopping block are the following:

  • Resources funding for public housing repairs and expansion
  • Tax credits and incentives meant to increase the private supply of affordable housing
  • Payment assistance programs for first-time or low income aspiring homeowners
  • Expansion of Housing Choice Vouchers

At the emergency meeting on Friday, we will discuss organizing a mass mobilization to stop these cuts, as well as fight evictions. We must ensure that the voices of we the people will be heard in the halls of Congress, the media, and the civil society. We need all hands-on deck to win this battle!
