It’s long past time to bring America’s criminal legal system in line with our values. We can no longer stand for a system that maintains the highest incarceration rate in the world, or the blatant racism rooted within that system. It’s time for bold action to live up to our ideals of justice and equality for all.

Today, Pete released a plan that will secure justice by reforming our criminal legal system. You can read the plan in its entirety here.

Pete’s plan will put more resources into public health, economic opportunity, and alternatives to imprisonment to reduce mass incarceration and racial inequalities within the system. His plan will keep communities safer and provide justice for all.

Fixing our broken system requires a comprehensive and thoughtful approach. That’s why Pete will ensure the right leaders are in place by diversifying the judiciary, appointing those truly committed to reform, and increasing accountability and training for our nation’s police. He’ll also take bold steps to get there: he will abolish private federal prisons, end the school-to-prison pipeline that disproportionately impacts students of color and students with disabilities, and support a constitutional amendment to abolish the death penalty.

As with many of America’s most urgent crises, we cannot accept more of the same failed policies and hollow talk. Our country is in a make-or-break moment. The time to make our criminal justice system fairer and more just is now.
