** ONE WEEK TO GO - Write to Lords to stop assisted suicide
------------------------------------------------------------
There’s still time to write to peers if you haven’t already. Please see the updated list of peers down to speak in the debate below.

Dear
SPUC supporter,
Assisted suicide is being debated in the House of Lords on Friday 22 October.

Please write to members of the House of Lords who are speaking in this debate, telling them why assisted suicide should not be legalised.

** What is happening?
------------------------------------------------------------

On Friday 22 October, The Assisted Dying Bill, introduced by Baroness Meacher (“The Meacher Bill”) will receive its second reading in the House of Lords.

The Bill is almost identical in form to the ‘Marris Bill’, which was overwhelmingly defeated by 330 votes to 118 in the House of Commons in 2015.

Due to constraints in Parliamentary time, bills in the Lords are unlikely to pass into law. However, this debate is part of the assisted suicide lobby’s push to change the law, so it is vital that Lords speak out strongly against it.

The 2 minute video below shows how assisted suicide would put disabled and vulnerable people in real danger.

** How do I write to Lords?
------------------------------------------------------------

We are suggesting that supporters write to peers who are down to speak in the debate.

For those who oppose assisted suicide, receiving letters/emails will give them ammunition when speaking out in Parliament. It is also important that those who support assisted suicide receive letters, so they cannot say that all correspondence has been on their side of the argument.

The list below shows the peers down to speak at the time of writing, and what we believe their position on assisted suicide to be.

We suggest picking a few peers from the “for” and “against” lists and writing to them. Peers can put themselves down to speak until 20 October, so you can find the most up-to-date list here ([link removed]) .

Sharing any personal stories you have, such as family members you feel would be under threat if assisted suicide is legalised, is very powerful. You might like to include some of the points in your letters from
this briefing ([link removed]) , ‘Key points on assisted suicide’.

Thank you for all you do to uphold the right to life.

With my very best wishes,
Alithea Williams
