Reuters (10/14/21) reports: "President Joe Biden and the National Security Council are closely tracking the issue of rising oil prices and looking at options to improve energy supply around the country, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said on Thursday. 'I would say that part is a supply issue...but part is also a logistics issue of being able to move supply around the country,' Psaki said. Brent crude futures on Thursday settled up 82 cents to $84 a barrel, a 1% gain, and its highest settle since October 2018."

No one has to force people to wait in line to buy the latest iPhone or other smart gadget. The problem is that electric appliances come with so many limits that even those of us who might like them can’t justify the purchase."

Sorry "special" envoy Kerry, Xi’s just not into it.

The Straits Times (6/1/21) reports: "Chinese diplomats have informed officials from the Group of 20 (G-20) nations that President Xi Jinping does not currently plan to attend a summit in Italy this month in person, according to four people familiar with the matter. The message was conveyed at a meeting of G-20 envoys known as sherpas in Florence last month. Chinese envoys cited China's Covid-19 protocols, which can include quarantine mandates for returning travellers, as a reason Mr Xi did not intend to go to Rome, three of the sources said...The G-20 summit takes place on the eve of the United Nations Climate Change conference, COP26, where leaders will try and strike a deal to keep global temperatures in check and reach net-zero by 2050, as well as raise tens of billions of dollars to support green transitions in developing countries. As one of the world's largest emitters of greenhouse gases, China's role in reaching a global accord is seen as key. The European diplomats were sceptical that Mr Xi would attend COP26, which is being held in Glasgow, should he miss the Rome summit. But another person said the British government, which is hosting the climate meeting, is still hopeful he will show up."

Bloomberg (10/13/21) reports: "The European Union is seeking an international ban on all new oil, gas and coal projects in the Arctic as part of its efforts to tackle climate change. The European Commission pledged to work with non-EU countries toward a legal obligation not to develop hydrocarbon reserves or purchase output from the region, according to a strategy published Wednesday. The move comes just days before crucial United Nations talks that some see as the last opportunity to control catastrophic global warming. The bloc wants an “international agreement on a moratorium” on energy projects in the Arctic, Environment Commissioner Virginijus Sinkevicius told Bloomberg News. 'This is the make or break decade in the fight against the climate and biodiversity crises. Our generation has the unique and only opportunity to change the world and the Arctic is at the center of this change.' The EU will need to focus its efforts on Russia, which produces large amounts of oil and gas in its Arctic areas, and sells about 87% of the liquefied natural gas it produces in the region to Europe. The continent is currently grappling with an unprecedented energy crisis, which some partly blame on lower gas supplies from Russia. "
