In February, the San Francisco Board of Education voted to eliminate merit-based admissions standards at Lowell High School, one of the city’s top-ranked public schools, with the stated goal of increasing diversity in the student body. Eight months later, the numbers of Black, Hispanic, and white students in Lowell’s incoming 9th-grade class increased—but the number of Asian-American students plunged sharply.

Malibu refuses to abide by California’s new housing laws, and one family suffers

 

All Elizabeth Riddick wanted to do was provide a safe, private living space for her mother, Renee, near her family’s Malibu home. An accessory dwelling unit (ADU), or so-called granny flat, was the optimal solution. California’s recently relaxed ADU laws meant the Riddick family could add an ADU onto their existing property with less red tape.

Unfortunately, Malibu, like many cities throughout California, views ADUs as a problem, and instead flouts state law and leaves families like the Riddicks to suffer.

Federal judge temporarily blocks Colorado’s racial preferences in COVID relief

 

Like many other small businesses, Resort Meeting Source, a Colorado-based event-planning business, suffered major revenue losses stemming from the pandemic. But racial preferences baked into a state COVID-related grant program put white business owners like Steve Collins at the back of the line for financial assistance.

Just five days after Mr. Collins sued, a federal judge granted a temporary restraining order—a major victory that prevents Colorado from implementing the race-based business preferences in grants while the case proceeds.
