Hi John,
Since India and South Africa proposed a patent waiver last October, nearly 4 million people have died from Covid-19, averaging more than 10,000 deaths a day. Yet this week at the WTO meeting, the UK government continued to block the proposed patent waiver which would allow global south countries to produce Covid-19 vaccines patent-free and save more lives.
Despite initial hesitance from countries like the US, Australia and France, these countries have now also joined a majority of low- and middle income countries in support of a waiver. In fact, the UK is now one of only a handful of hold outs in opposing the waiver.
The UK government’s lack of international solidarity at this week’s WTO meeting is hugely disappointing, but not a surprise. When pressed on this, the government says the UK is a significant financial donor to Covax, but Britain had not donated any actual vaccine doses until August this year. And by late September, the UK had only donated 6 million out of a pledged 100 million. It was also recently revealed that Britain took 500,000 Pfizer jabs from Covax supplies back in March.
As part of a world-wide alliance, we have already moved mountains just to get this far. Our media exposure, activist stunts and online mobilisation have created enough public pressure to help convince countries hesitant to join the waiver proposal to support it. And we’ve piled pressure on governments and pharma to make sure vaccines reach people in global south countries by speaking out over vaccine injustice at every step: on higher prices for countries like Uganda than the EU, vaccine factories in countries like Bangladesh lying idle, and scarce vaccines being exported from South Africa to Europe.
All of this work would be impossible without the support from people like you signing our petitions, joining protests or donating to our campaigns. Thank you!
But now we need to scale up our campaigning efforts and go further by demanding large pharmaceutical companies share their vaccine technology and know-how, to maximise global vaccine production and continue to build public pressure on the UK government to support the waiver.
To do this, we need your continued support. Signing up as a member with a monthly donation of just £3 gives us the stability to see this campaign through to the end. Achieving a waiver on Covid-19 vaccines would show that people's health is far too important to be left at the mercy of big pharma's profit margins. This would be a big step towards making all medicines more accessible to all.

The Europe-wide ‘Day of Shame’ protest ahead of the WTO meeting this week, highlighted the loss of more than 10,000 lives every day the UK continues to block the Covid vaccine patent waiver.
** Campaign to secure access to treatments for all
------------------------------------------------------------
The issue of vaccine and treatment waivers is not new. In fact, we’ve been campaigning for radical change in the pharmaceutical industry for years.
The pharmaceutical industry is one of the most profitable in the world, but it makes billions in profits from charging high prices and controlling who gets access. Meanwhile, people suffer and die from treatable conditions because they themselves or their governments can’t afford the extortionate prices.
During this pandemic, we are seeing how this profit driven system is completely inadequate to ensure vaccines and treatments reach everyone who needs them. The pharmaceutical industry, and the global economic system that supports it, leaves vital treatments out of reach for millions of people around the world.
We need to continue to grow our movement to challenge the pharmaceutical industry. Membership from people like you, helps bring all of these plans into the world – and to succeed!

** Our shared vision for the future
------------------------------------------------------------
The failure of the people in power to deal with the pandemic has also rightly furthered distrust in the rules of the global economy to deal fairly with the serious questions we face, from climate change to the threat to our human rights posed by trade deals that promote the interests of transnational corporations.
Our supporters, members and campaigners share the vision of a world where people are placed before profit; a global economy that works for everyone. That’s why all of our campaigns – whether they strive for global access to medicines, trade justice, climate action or debt cancellations – challenge the status quo and provide alternative, sustainable solutions to these deep-rooted problems.
By signing up as a member today, you’ll help make this vision a reality and build an even bigger movement.
