Team,
Last week, a whistleblower from Facebook testified before a Senate committee about how Facebook is hurting its users and our democracy.
Here’s the problem with stopping misinformation on Facebook: Right now, tech platforms like Facebook have legal immunity when it comes to the content posted on their platforms, even when that content breaks existing laws.
The best way for us to combat misinformation, harassment, sexual violence, and other bad behavior on Facebook is to make sure the law doesn’t give Facebook a ‘get out of jail free card’ for harm it enables -- and I’ve introduced legislation called the SAFE TECH Act to do exactly that.
Facebook shouldn’t be immune from legal and monetary consequences for its irresponsibility. Add your name now to hold Facebook accountable. [link removed]
Everyone has a right in this country to say stupid stuff. But that right doesn’t extend to having it amplified millions of times across the internet. We should enforce our existing laws about behavior like harassment and fraud, even when that behavior takes place on a social media platform.
Facebook has promised before to address misinformation on its platforms, but its efforts have been half-hearted at best. It’s clear we cannot rely upon the goodwill of the Facebook leadership to correct this problem on its own. We need governmental and societal action.
Add your name now: Urge Congress to take action holding Facebook accountable for misinformation and other bad behavior on its platform. [link removed]
Thank you,
Mark Warner
