Rossi, a Democrat, repeatedly rebuffed members of the public and political opponents who questioned why some of the top officials within the West Haven city government were able to pocket part of the federal funds through overtime pay and reimbursed compensation time.
Connecticut Republican State Party Chairman Ben Proto said, "The rapid shift in messaging from Mayor Nancy Rossi is a telltale sign that the impending corruption case against the city government she leads actually holds water. Mayor Rossi is now scrambling to distance herself from the role she must have played as Mayor. There is a simple question that all involved, including the Mayor, must be asked and must answer: 'What did you know and when did you know it?’ It’s almost laughable that the Mayor called for her own internal audit as the FBI was knocking at her door.”
“When is it ever necessary for an administrative assistant for the City Council, a political appointee, to have to work overtime for the unpaid city council?" Proto asked.
Proto continued, "This is just another confirmation of our stance that the best managed towns and cities in Connecticut are managed by Republicans, and the worst managed are run by Democrats. In West Haven, as in most if not all of our cities and towns run by Democrats, there is a need for better, more responsible, more transparent leadership. It is time for the good people of West Haven to look deeply into their city government and know that the corruption that prevails is not only giving the City of West Haven a bad name, but is hindering the growth and opportunities that the people of West Haven so richly deserve."
"West Haven has suffered long enough under corrupt Democratic rule, Barry Cohen and the Republican team are exactly what West Haven needs most at this point in time. You know with Barry and Republican leadership, the FBI won't be opening a branch office in West Haven" continued Proto.
"I, along with thousands of people of the great city of West Haven, surely hope that we don't have to endure another FBI ‘perp walk’ of people who are supposed to be serving the public," Proto concluded.
