Dear Colleagues,

The coronavirus crisis has amplified claims of a “national teacher shortage” in public education. “Pandemic Fuels Staggering Teacher Shortages Across the U.S.,” a recent headline warned. But a new report from FutureEd and EducationCounsel argues that such sweeping declarations don’t accurately reflect teacher supply and demand and could lead policymakers to adopt counterproductive recruitment and retention strategies.
Report author Sandi Jacobs, a principal at EducationCounsel, analyzes supply and demand for teachers before the Covid pandemic, identifies new staffing questions that have arisen during the current crisis, and offers policy recommendations that help states and districts take a nuanced approach to ensuring that all students are taught by effective educators.

On other topics, every state has now submitted a plan to the U.S. Department of Education for spending education-related federal Covid-relief aid. Here’s a summary of the plans and our analysis.

FutureEd research advisor Laura Hamilton shared an essay on the importance of civics education in today’s challenging national political climate. Education Next excerpted our recent report on the District of Columbia Public Schools’ highly successful teacher-hiring system. And we published two new FutureU podcasts, including an interview with Morehouse College President David Thomas and a roundtable discussion with higher education reporters.

We continue to chronicle the latest leadership changes in the education sector in The Churn and track the Biden administration’s latest appointments to the U.S. Education Department, including three leaders recently confirmed by the Senate. And The Horizon lists upcoming in-person and virtual education events. Send us your future events and job news to [email protected], and we’d be happy to post them.

Thanks and best wishes,
Tom
