It seems that the American people (and Congress) can't receive direct information from the Trump administration without a court order.
After months of ignoring my information requests about the Trump International Hotel in the Old Post Office Pavilion - a building owned by taxpayers - I issued a subpoena to the General Services Administration for their lack of oversight of the Trump Hotel.
I raised concerns about the lease back in 2016 and have been actively investigating the Trump Hotel ever since. And GSA has been resisting every step of the way. To date, I have received over 10,000 documents from GSA - and not a single key financial or legal document. That's why I'm demanding all communications between GSA and President Trump and his children as well as all monthly financial records.
As both the President of the United States and the owner of a hotel occupying a federal building, he is both the lessor and lessee of the property - do you see the problem here? Equally alarming, foreign governments like Saudi Arabia are booking floors of hotel rooms at exorbitant rates which is directly profiting President Trump.
The Trump Administration's unprecedented level of stonewalling has given me no choice but to issue a subpoena. We need to know exactly how much President Trump is profiting from foreign governments looking to curry favor by booking rooms at his hotel.
The lease expressly prohibits any elected official of the government of the United States from deriving any benefit from the lease. The American people deserve to know if he is violating the Emoluments Clauses of the U.S. Constitution to enrich himself at the expense of our tax dollars. I'm determined to deliver the truth to the American people - even if it results in years in court.
Enough is enough. It's time for the Trump administration to be held accountable.
Peter
