With 6 days left in the 3rd Special Session, I wanted to update you on the various maps in the redistricting process.
US Congress – Texas gains 2 new seats in DC thanks to our Republican leadership attracting millions of new Texas residents fleeing liberal oppression.
I am proud to say the Congressional map shores up several Congressional districts for Republicans while still increasing the size of our Republican Congressional delegation.
We are confident we gain no less than two seats with the proposed maps, which have passed the State Senate and were heard in the State House Committee yesterday. We expect a full House floor vote Monday to finalize this map.
Texas Senate – The proposed State Senate map has passed the Senate and has been voted out of committee in the House. This map would grow our Republican Senate majority by at least one seat and is scheduled for a full vote on the House floor Friday.
Texas House – The Texas House has drawn a map that is much less favorable to Republicans. The House maps increase the number of Republican seats from 83 to 84, but puts numerous Republican seats in play.
To illustrate, in 20 of the 84 Republican districts, Trump received less than 55% of the vote in 2020. In contrast, Biden received less than 55% of the vote in only 6 Democrat districts in the new map.
In addition, the House made Republican Jeff Cason’s district more than 60% Democrat, while at the same time, shoring up several Democrat districts that were attainable by Republicans under the previous maps.
State Board of Education –The Senate has once again passed a solid map that expands the Republican majority on the SBOE and the bill has been passed out of House Committee. A full House floor vote on this map is scheduled for Friday.
As you can see, there is still a lot to accomplish in a short amount of time. Thus far, no redistricting map has passed both chambers.
With the end of the 3rd Special Session looming next Wednesday, we will update you again as maps undergo final passage, including whether a 4th Special Session will be necessary.
