Learn About ECT Hello John, Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) has been shown to be effective for treatment resistant schizophrenia, but few families know about it. Join us for our next webinar, Thursday, October 21 at 3 p.m. EST, and get the answers from our special guest, Brandon Kitay, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral science at Emory University School of Medicine. Kitay, M.D., Ph.D. will present on his research from the Yale Depression Research Program (YDRP), published in the July edition of Psychiatric Services, which studied the barriers physicians face when attempting to start or expand ECT services to understand why so few providers and healthcare systems offer ECT. The results of this study found several themes, including that stigma is a significant barrier to adopting ECT services. Kitay, M.D., Ph.D. and his co-authors suggest this stigma persists, in part, from the negative or inaccurate portrayal of ECT in the media as well as the lack of educational resources both for patients and medical professionals about the procedure. A current ECT practitioner himself, Kitay, M.D., Ph.D. will share facts about ECT and discuss efforts toward increasing access to this potentially life-saving treatment.
