This week Friday, October 15, the Milwaukee Finance and Personnel Committee will be hearing proposals for the use of American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) dollars. There are several proposals on the table that benefit environmental justice and climate. Send a message to your city council member in support of climate and environmental justice initiatives in the Milwaukee city budget. ([link removed])

There are a number of proposals that benefit environmental justice and that address the climate crisis, including funding for Green and Healthy Homes (GHHI), green jobs and workforce development, lead abatement, urban forestry, bike lanes, energy efficiency upgrades and more. We are excited about all of these programs - especially a proposal for a program that would make energy efficiency upgrades accessible to low income, high energy burden households.

Support climate responses and environmental justice in Milwaukee’s city budget and in the use of ARPA funds! ([link removed])

Sierra Club is excited about the commitment to decreasing energy burden - the percentage of your income that goes to paying for energy. Sierra Club and our partners recently released a report highlighting the disparities in energy burden between Black, Latinx and white households. The report found that households in well-off white neighborhoods may have an average energy burden of 1% or less, versus the 7 - 10% (or higher) many in predominantly Black, Hispanic or Latinx neighborhoods pay.

The Climate, Energy and Equity program that the Mayor is recommending would pay for energy efficiency and weatherization programs for renters or homeowners in high energy burden neighborhoods or who are low income. Energy efficiency is one clear way to decrease energy bills and energy burden, so we should show support for the Mayor’s proposal to fund this program at $5m.

Send your message in support for this and other programs! ([link removed])
