Yesterday was yet another sad day for democracy in Michigan, where as Secretary of State it is my responsibility to protect the right to vote.
The former president turned his attention to our state yet again, promoting a rally of democracy deniers on the steps of our state capitol in Lansing. Trump’s enablers in the state legislature and others -- including one who is running to replace me as our state’s chief election officer -- grabbed the spotlight yesterday to do one thing: lie to the people of Michigan.
These "leaders" put their own partisan ambitions ahead of the truth and the needs of our state and country, demanding voters ignore the validation of over 250 state and local professional audits already conducted, in an attempt to undermine the public’s faith in what was the most secure and successful election in our state’s history, executed exceptionally well by over 1,500 clerks throughout our state.
It was disgraceful.
But here’s another indisputable truth: These democracy deniers aren’t just continuing to lie to the people of Michigan to keep The Big Lie alive. Their ultimate goal is to sow frustration, confusion and chaos so that citizens -- like you -- give up, disengage, stop voting, and thereby stop holding them accountable.
I’m not going to let that happen. And I know you won’t either. That’s why I ask you to join me right now in saying -- and showing -- that we'll never stop defending our democracy against these attacks.
Onward,
-- Jocelyn Benson, Michigan Secretary of State
