Jack, Texas’ six-week abortion ban has been in effect since September 1, 2021. In that time, a protracted legal battle has unfolded, creating chaos and confusion for people living in Texas seeking abortion care.
Texas’ law forces nearly everyone to travel out of state for an abortion, but that’s far from an easy task. Patients interviewed for a legal brief filed in United States v. Texas describe the struggles and strain placed on themselves, providers, and clinics: one patient, a mother to seven children, spent half her monthly wages on lodging, food, and gas to be able to travel to an appointment in Oklahoma after learning that the closest clinic to her, in Mississippi, had a nine-week wait.
Not everyone who needs or wants an abortion has the financial means or practical support at work or home to be able to travel out of state. One patient interviewed for the brief is a single mother and abuse survivor who cannot access abortion in Texas and is unsure if she can take time off from work and find child care that will allow her to travel. Another was willing to travel but cannot because of the terms of her probation. An undocumented patient said she would have to carry the pregnancy to term rather than jeopardize her immigration status.
Abortion funds exist to help provide people with the financial and practical support they need to access abortion care. Please contribute $1 to each of these abortion funds in states surrounding Texas that are helping people travel.
Abortion funds provide small grants and/or practical assistance like lodging, transportation, child care, and translation services to people seeking abortion care. They are critical organizations that work collaboratively to make sure as many people are able to access care as possible, which is why it’s imperative to support funds in states surrounding Texas as more and more people travel for care.
There are dozens of abortion funds across the country. Today, we are specifically asking you to donate to seven abortion funds in states that border or are very close to Texas: Arkansas Abortion Support Network, Cobalt Abortion Fund (Colorado), Yellowhammer Fund (Alabama), Mississippi Reproductive Freedom Fund, New Mexico Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice, New Orleans Abortion Fund, and Missouri Abortion Fund (previously known as Gateway Women’s Access Fund).
Contributing to abortion funds isn’t only about fighting against Texas’ six-week ban to ensure people have access to care now. It’s also about building infrastructure for the future as we continue to work toward abortion justice for all.
Jack, please contribute an amount that is meaningful to you to help fund abortion for people traveling out of Texas for their appointments.
In solidarity,
Sarah Hogg, Daily Kos
