Just a few years ago, the idea of a $15 minimum wage was dismissed by the Washington establishment and mainstream media as a radical, socialist idea. Not so much anymore.

I am pleased to tell you that yesterday the House of Representatives passed legislation saying that the minimum wage should be $15 an hour.

That is incredible progress. It is a victory for all of us who campaigned for the idea that a person who works 40 hours a week shouldn’t live in poverty.

But our fight is not yet over: we must tell Mitch McConnell to hold a vote in the Senate on a $15 minimum wage.

I am going to ask Senator McConnell to hold a vote to pass this bill, and when I do, I want to have as many people as possible who have signed our petition saying they demand a vote, as well. Will you add your name?

Sign my petition to Mitch McConnell to say that the Senate should vote on our bill to pass a $15 minimum wage.

A $15 minimum wage is not only a popular idea and the right and moral thing to do, it is good policy.

This legislation would give more than 40 million low-wage workers a raise, more than 25 percent of the U.S. workforce. The average worker who would benefit from the bill is more than 35 years old.

But this bill does more to make sure these changes are permanent. Because the reality is that if the minimum wage in this country had kept pace with inflation and labor productivity since the late 1960s, it would be almost $30 an hour today. So my bill indexes the minimum wage to median wage growth after it takes full effect in 2024.

It also eliminates the loophole that allows tipped workers and workers with disabilities to be paid substantially less than the federal minimum wage. Plus it phases out the youth minimum wage, another loophole that allows employers to pay workers under 20 years old a lower wage for their first 90 calendar days of work.

This is real change for working people.

All across the country, workers are standing up and demanding fairer wages — and they are winning from their employers, and now, they are winning in Congress.

Mitch McConnell must hold a vote on our bill to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour. Add your name if you agree.

Together we are proving that not only are our ideas the right thing to do — but they are the popular thing to do. And when we come together, anything is possible.

In solidarity,

Bernie Sanders
