Viewing methane emissions, listening to Trump officials — a month of many firsts.

** This Land Needs Us
------------------------------------------------------------

It’s been quite a month here at the Journal, not least because the Journal team headed to Colorado for several days to join colleagues from around the country at the annual Society of Environmental Journalists conference. The conference brought several firsts for me. For one, I peered through the lens of a fancy camera to see firsthand the methane and/or VOC emissions spewing from an active natural gas extraction site, emissions that are invisible to the naked eye. (Special thanks to Earthworks ([link removed]) folks for sharing their equipment and expertise with us!)

I also had the unique experience of seeing Bureau of Land Management Acting Director William P. Pendley — who spent four decades advocating for corporate exploitation of public lands ([link removed]) — participate on a conference panel, responding to, and often evading, questions about his climate denialism and past statements he’s made comparing immigrants to cancer ([link removed]) . This was, I believe, the first time I’ve seen a Trump Administration official speak in person. It was as frustrating as I expected, but it was also motivating. It reminded me just how much I believe in the essential role of journalism and the work we do here at the Journal to shed light on environmental injustices and highlight the efforts of those fighting to save our public lands.

** Can Harpies Save the Amazon? ([link removed])
------------------------------------------------------------
The harpy eagle is a sight to behold — it’s uniquely tufted head feathers, it’s large size, it’s piercing stare. Which is why Brazilian scientists hope their new harpy eagle ecotourism venture will incentivize land conservation in key raptor range in the Amazon and stem rampant deforestation in the region.

** Trump Turns on Tongass ([link removed])
------------------------------------------------------------
Alaska’s Prince of Wales island lost a hefty slice of old-growth forest during the second half of the twentieth century. And now, the Trump administration is coming back for the rest, doing its best to roll back a roadless rule that for nearly two decades protected some 9 million acres of Tongass National Forest from loggers.

There now exist in this world at least 17 rats who can drive cars. And, get this, they seem to find it relaxing! Guess they are yet to experience LA traffic.

** Pot + Cars = More Ozone ([link removed])
------------------------------------------------------------

Cannabis has a big environmental footprint as growing it tends to suck up huge amounts of water and electricity. That’s old news. But get this, Colorado’s legal pot industry, in combination with tailpipe emissions from vehicles, is apparently also causing an unexpected increase in an unexpected air pollutant — ozone.

** Down in the Depths, a Moose ([link removed])
------------------------------------------------------------
Ok, some of you might already know this, but we only just learned that moose are natural divers and can swim down to nearly 20 feet to graze on aquatic plants growing at the bottom of lakes and rivers. Coolness!
