John --
The Republican-led Texas State House voted for the passage of an aggressively gerrymandered State House map, further solidifying their goal to eliminate competitive seats and double down on their rigged maps from ten years ago. The map voted on today is nothing more than an anti-democracy power grab. Most strikingly, the gerrymandered map increases the number of majority white districts -- despite the fact that 95% of Texas’ population growth came from communities of color.
What we are up against is a Republican state legislature that believes politicians should decide who wins elections and who should be able to vote. In a perverse twist, this legislature has decided to pick its voters and deny citizens of Texas their right to choose their representatives.
This process is far from over. NDRC and our on-the-ground affiliates will continue to demand that the Texas Legislature hold additional hearings that allow public input and then put in place a new map that appropriately reflects the census data, the state’s diverse communities, and the ideals of American democracy.

Since 2017, the NDRC has executed a comprehensive redistricting strategy that shifts the redistricting power, creating fair districts where Democrats can compete. Our victories have been made possible by our strong community of grassroots supporters. |
