We’re just three weeks away from Celebrate Progress 2021! By now, you’ve likely been getting calls, text messages, and seen our social media feed talking all about our annual fundraiser gala, being held virtually this year on November 3rd at 6:00PM!

Without your help, we couldn’t sustain the work we do each day educating and empowering Nevadans to speak out for progressive values and issues. If you can make a gift of $125.00 for a ticket to Celebrate Progress, that gift goes directly to things like helping me stay up-to-date on the cutting edge of polling and messaging research and designing a communications plan for success throughout 2022!

But Celebrate Progress is also about lifting up and honoring some awesome people who led the way to move Nevada forward over the past year. This past weekend, you met Former Lt. Governor Kate Marshall, Marlene Lockard, and Bradley Schrager. This week, allow me to introduce our Northern and Southern Nevada Activists of the Year, and our Community Service Award winner!

Jennifer Cantley

Nevada’s air quality is decidedly not great, especially lately, as dust storms, wildfires, and vehicle smog continue to sting our lungs statewide. It’s enough to make someone say, “Enough is enough.” And that someone is Jennifer Ann Cantley, our 2021 Northern Nevada Progressive Activist of the Year! Mother, Reiki Master, and proprietor of the One Source Network consulting firm, Jennifer has worked closely alongside groups fighting for equitable solutions to the climate crisis, such as Moms Clean Air Force. Jennifer's latest heart project is to help the Atsa Koodakuh wyh Nuwu (People of Red Mountain) of the Fort McDermitt Reservation to protect their people from the Thacker Pass lithium mine project.

Akiko Cooks

There’s no way to sugarcoat it; Clark County schools have a white supremacy problem. We’ve seen this in the handling (or lack thereof) of racist threats made to students on school campuses’ and the unhinged conniption fit thrown by some parents in response to the school district’s proposed Anti-Racism Policy. Our Southern Nevada 2021 Progressive Activist of the Year is a parent who’s putting her foot down to demand a racism-free learning environment for our kids. Our honoree is none other than Akiko Cooks, co-founder of #1865 No Racism in Schools and Community Organizer with the Mass Liberation Project NV!

Lisa Levine

Lisa Levine is such an amazing Nevadan, we had to create a new award category just to capture her contributions to our great state! Lisa is the recipient of our first Community Service Award. This award is designed to recognize an individual who selflessly works to provide needed resources to communities struggling in Nevada. This describes Lisa in spades. On top of over 15 years of experience as a public affairs professional, her greatest passion is strengthening Nevada’s education system. Lisa was appointed to the Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents by Governor Sisolak, where she fought for stronger protections for victims of sexual violence and discrimination, advocated for commonsense solutions to cut waste by reinvesting public dollars to the classroom, and kept students from being evicted.
