John, we have never seen an investment in our communities like this before.
As part of the Build Back Better Act, President Biden proposed $5 billion for Community Violence Intervention (CVI) programs to combat gun violence in America. This historic investment would ensure local, on-the-ground organizations in communities disproportionately impacted by gun violence have the resources they need to reduce gun death and injury through an evidence-based, public health approach.
I know this community-centered investment will save lives.
CVI models establish partnerships between community members and community leaders to offer critical social services — like GED tutoring, mental health counseling, housing support, and more — to address the root causes of gun violence and provide new opportunities for our communities. Research tells us just how effective this investment will be. In Richmond, CA, gun homicides reduced a whopping 71% between 2007 and 2016.
We can have the same success nationally, John. But we can only do it with your help, and it has to be right now. Thank you for your continued advocacy and support. Already, we’ve sent nearly 1,400 messages to Congress in support of the Build Back Better Act — and we’re not slowing down now.
