Dear John xxxxxx,
After a short hiatus, our Moving Beyond Pandemic podcast is back. Host Meghan Benton, our director for international research, speaks to Kelley Lee, head of the Pandemics and Borders initiative at Canada's Simon Fraser University, about the still-contested role of COVID-19 travel restrictions as a public health tool. Their conversation examines the use of mobility restrictions, both at the onset of the pandemic in early 2020 and as new contagious variants have emerged, as well as what can be learned from the past 18 months as countries and multilateral organizations seek to prepare for future pandemics.
"We need to begin by finding a way to distinguish the risk from travel depending on the kind of pathogen we're dealing with," Dr. Lee said. "We need to apply an evidence-informed risk-based approach to border management."
This is the seventh episode of Moving Beyond Pandemic. Previous episodes have featured a range of experts discussing fundamental questions of mobility amid COVID-19, including: How will cities be reshaped by global immobility? Could curbing globalization prevent future pandemics? And how has the pandemic affected the human smuggling industry?
