Friend,
Water is a human right.
At home in my Michigan district, I’ve seen how many people struggle to access the most basic right of clean water. Even before the pandemic, millions of people across the country were going without running water simply because they couldn’t afford to pay for it.
That’s why I’ve introduced legislation to stop utility shutoffs and get water service turned back on for low- and no-income families. And why I’ve fought to include funding in the Build Back Better Act to replace lead pipes that poison drinking water. Not enough people understand: there are cities like Flint all across the country, and many schools and homes have dangerous levels of lead in their water. We've got to draw attention to this issue.

This summer and fall as we’ve knocked on doors in our district, a recurring theme we’re hearing from residents is the lack of access to clean drinking water. Recent flooding has made this crisis even worse, stressing our aging water infrastructure.
In Benton Harbor, MI―a majority-Black community in the southwestern corner of the state―residents are being forced to use bottled water because of dangerous levels of lead contamination in their drinking water.
