Friend --
It's a busy time in Durham! As you will see below, there are many
ways you can help shape our community's future. We wanted to provide
you a quick list of updates and opportunities to be involved.
1. Early Voting in the municipal election begins
October 14th. That's this Thursday! Get out and make your voice heard.
Election day is November 2nd. Information about times and locations is
available here.
2. Durham has a new police chief. Patrice
Andrews comes to the department after serving as chief in
Morrisville. She's very familiar with Durham though, having worked at
DPD for more than 20 years. Welcome, Chief Andrews!
3. Meanwhile, the work of Durham Community Safety and Wellness Task
Force continues, and the group is hosting a Crisis
Response Roundtable this Friday and Saturday. Community
members will share their experiences receiving aid in times of crisis,
learn about what's happening in other cities, and help envision a
model of crisis response for Durham. We encourage you to register
and attend!
4. Durham County leaders need your feedback on
what you want from a county manager! The County
Commission is currently in the hiring process for a new county
manager. Fill out this
survey to share your perspective about the critical issues facing
the county and what qualities a leader should have.
5. Durham Public Schools is in the process of re-imagining
its magnet school options. The district is hosting a series
of listening sessions to inform the policy updates. The first session
will provide an overview of the current policy and rationale for
reviewing it. The second session will provide an update about the
feedback that was heard and drafts of potential policies. There are multiple
dates for each of the sessions – find one that works for you!
6. Riding the GoDurham buses is getting
easier! You can now track bus arrival times in
real-time in the Google Maps app. Thank you GoDurham staff -
technology is wild. Don't forget that GoDurham and GoTriangle bus
services are currently fare-free
through next summer!
7. We need new PA Board members! If you have any interest in
serving on the PA's Board of Directors
for 2022, please fill out this
interest form. All PA members are welcome! We are especially
looking for potential leaders with experience in data management and
organizational finance. Feel free to reach out to any current board
members with questions.
8. As always, you are welcome and encouraged to get
involved in the ongoing work of our Action
Teams! Check the schedule
for meeting times and links.
This was a lot of information, and hopefully some of you made it
through to the end! Your reward for doing so is this
webcam to watch baby cheetahs at the National Zoo.
We look forward to working with you to make Durham the best it can
be.
Thanks for all you do,
Millicent and Adam
