La version française suivra.

Earlier this month on October 4, more than 50 countries at the United Nations Human Rights Council called for the urgent protection of intersex human rights against "harmful practices, violence and discrimination based on sex characteristics." In the days following the initial UN speech, Egale was pleased to see Canada add its name to the growing list of countries calling to #ProtectIntersexRights.

Currently in Canada, we do not have sufficient laws to protect intersex people.

In fact, surgeries on intersex children have been condemned by major human rights groups such as the United Nations, Physicians for Human Rights, and Human Rights Watch, as well as every intersex-led organization in the world.

The UN speech is crucial to advancing the human rights of intersex communities across the globe, and we look forward to seeing the specific actions in policymaking that come out of this joint call - both from Canada, and the international community.

Egale is no stranger to advancing policy to protect intersex people from harmful childhood surgeries; including our recent application at the Ontario Superior Court of Justice in a groundbreaking intersex human rights case.

We look forward to bringing more attention to intersex rights later this month on Intersex Awareness Day (October 26).
