Hi John,

American women are 21 times more likely to be shot and killed than women in other high-income countries.

It is overwhelmingly clear that guns and domestic violence are a deadly combination. Firearms are used in over half of the murders of women by an intimate partner. That’s why one of the most effective and commonsense gun violence prevention strategies is to disarm people convicted of domestic violence.

Federal law prohibits people convicted of domestic violence against an intimate partner from possessing guns. But a HUGE gap in the law, often referred to as the “boyfriend loophole,” leaves countless survivors vulnerable. This loophole means abusive dating partners or convicted stalkers are NOT prohibited from having firearms.

Because of the boyfriend loophole, people who abuse dating partners remain legally eligible to have guns, even if they would have been barred from gun possession if they had committed the same acts against a spouse, child, or other family member.

This loophole is not insignificant. More than half of all intimate partner homicides are committed by dating partners. The good news is, we know what works: Research shows that when states broaden their firearm prohibition laws beyond federal law to cover abusive dating partners, intimate partner gun homicides go down.

The House of Representatives has passed legislation to close this lethal loophole, but the Senate has refused to act. We cannot sit idly by while their inaction leaves survivors vulnerable.

Add your name now to demand that Congress close the Boyfriend Loophole and disarm domestic violence.
