Almost 100 years ago, Bruce’s Beach was taken from Willa and Charles Bruce, Black entrepreneurs from California.
The two purchased the property in 1912 and it was a popular resort for Black residents in the community. After years of racist harassment and violence, city officials took the property through eminent domain.
Two weeks ago, Gavin Newsom signed legislation to return the beachfront property to their descendants.
