John,
I’m Speaker Ryan Fecteau and it is my privilege to serve as the first openly gay Speaker of the Maine House of Representatives. National Coming Out Day was yesterday and it's a very important day for so many people. We have made so much progress as a state and a country and I am so proud that a new generation of queer Americans can grow up in a more tolerant and just society.
In the Legislature, I’ve worked to champion issues like affordable housing, expanded child care, and education. I have also worked tirelessly to advance LGBTQ+ rights, successfully leading the fight to protect LGBTQ+ youth and ban dangerous conversion therapy in Maine.
But the reason I’m writing to you today is because Democrats would never be able to make the kind of progress we’re making if it weren’t for the support of the Maine Democratic Party. The MDP has stood with me from the start -- and they're working hard to defend and expand our majority.
Can I count on you to step up now and contribute $5 to support Maine Democrats?
Unfortunately, our recent, intolerant past is still right behind us and we know there are people who would like to turn back the clock.
Another term of Paul LePage would be a disaster for Mainers -- and especially our LGBTQ+ community. When the legislature first passed a ban on conversion therapy in 2018, then-Governor LePage vetoed the legislation. Thankfully, Mainers elected Governor Janet Mills, who signed the bill into law in 2019, she eliminated the harmful practice, and helped protect LGBTQ+ youth across Maine.
We can’t afford to let LePage and the GOP roll back our progress -- and that’s exactly why we need to support the Maine Democratic Party, our strongest ally in the fight to keep Maine blue.
John, I'm personally asking: will you make a $5 contribution to MDP today?
Thank you,
Ryan Fecteau
