Friend,
We are just three weeks away from our Civil, Human and Women’s Rights Conference, when activists like you will head to Washington, D.C., or join us virtually, for open forums, workshops, panels and keynote speakers to help educate and organize our ranks.
Still need to register? We're sold out of in-person tickets, but you can go to www.aft.org/chwr2021 and register for virtual attendance now!
On Oct. 22 and 23, you will have an opportunity to listen to and learn from leading experts on critical social justice issues such as voting, immigration, white supremacy, the cost of being a woman, intersectionality in our LGBTQIA+ community, combating anti-Asian hate, strategic community organizing, multiculturalism and righteous resistance. This year’s lineup of speakers includes the Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II, president and senior lecturer of Repairers of the Breach and co-chair of the Poor People's Campaign; community activist Juana Bordas, who specializes in leadership development and diversity training; civil rights attorney, minister and activist Fred Gray; Peggy McIntosh, director of the Gender, Race, and Inclusive Education Project; and Kent Wong, director of the UCLA Labor Center, where he teaches courses in labor studies and Asian American studies; as well as many of our local union leaders.
An added bonus for those in Washington will be a conference bag filled with informative AFT publications as well as books authored by some of our speakers, including Stamped, by Ibram X Kendi and Jason Reynolds, with a forward by AFT President Randi Weingarten; Bus Ride to Justice, by Fred Gray; Salsa, Soul, and Spirit, by Juana Bordas; and Asian American Workers Rising: APALA’s Struggle to Transform the Labor Movement, edited by Kent Wong and others.
We also have important COVID-19 updates for you all. As a reminder, this conference is a hybrid event. Virtual attendees will have access to the same workshops, panels and speakers as those attending in person. The delta variant has thrown us all a curveball, and we respect the choice to attend virtually. If attending in person, you will need to provide proof of vaccination or proof of a negative COVID-19 test result, wear masks unless actively eating, and maintain social distance.
Mark your calendar and get ready for a unique opportunity to network, connect and share resources with a community of believers, both in person and virtually. We truly hope you will join us for an experience that informs your mind, inspires your heart and moves your spirit to action. We can accomplish together what is impossible to do alone. Head over to www.aft.org/chwr2021 for registration and information today!
See you soon!
In unity,
Fedrick Ingram
AFT Secretary-Treasurer
