John,
I was involved in the most incredible event last week.
Starting late on Wednesday, advocates started a 24-hour storytelling vigil for Home and Community Based Services (HCBS). On the lawn in front of the US Capitol, we shared stories from more than 7,500 people who rely on HCBS.
As we lifted up the stories of individuals directly impacted by the lack of HCBS, the energy from supporters and newcomers to the fight had me in awe. Dozens of members from our partner groups ADAPT (a disability justice organization), The Arc of the United States, National Domestic Workers Alliance, and SEIU read the stories of people who couldn’t be there.
Thanks to the power of the stories we read through the night, our determination shined much louder than our exhaustion. And our elected officials heard us — Senator Bob Casey came by to listen and meet with advocates.
We’re going to win this for our loved ones. Lawmakers owe it to us to provide the best quality of life for us. The sentiment was heard loud in clear throughout the night of the vigil.
Want to get involved with our next storytelling action? Share your story now so we know what you’re going through. And we’ll be in touch when an elected official needs to hear your voice.
With care,
