“I was told that a large proportion of the offspring would be surplus to requirements. Specifically, they would be scooped up in a net and thrown out as if they were rubbish.”

These animals were baby seahorses bred in captivity at a UK aquarium. It seems, tragically, before they were even born they were doomed to face death in the bottom of a waste bin. The aquarium apparently didn’t have enough space to keep them. Yet they bred them anyway, under a claim to protect wild populations. Live animals, thrown out like rubbish.
John, this is what an aquarium whistleblower shared with me when I was working on an undercover investigation for Freedom for Animals.
He had quit his job at a major UK aquarium after he had witnessed the awful treatment of animals. He wanted to share his experiences of working ‘behind the scenes’, in the hope he could help free animals from aquariums.
Will you join him in that fight?
By sending a donation today you will be supporting the only campaign working to protect animals in aquariums, ([link removed]) end the trade in wild caught animals and to close down aquariums once and for all.

I recently shared the tragic story with you of Brenda the octopus who was desperately trying to escape her prison by throwing herself at the aquarium glass wall. ([link removed]) I shared the story of a smooth-hound shark, who I saw spiralling around and around for no reason, driven mad by his captivity.
These animals are just a few from the many that I met on my undercover investigation. There are many more who are suffering everyday, who need our help. That is why I am reaching out again today to ask for your support in our campaign.
With your help we are taking our findings right to the top, to take action for these animals, both those still alive and those tragically no longer with us. We are demanding that DEFRA, who oversee animal welfare law, take immediate action against these aquariums. Will you please send a donation today to help us do this?

Across the course of my investigation I watched with sadness as fishes swam up and down the edges of the tank, again and again, searching for a way out. I witnessed rays who were swimming with their heads sticking out of the water, an abnormal behaviour only seen in captivity.
I saw injured and sick animals too. I saw rays with their barbs removed (the part of the body they use for defence). I saw fishes with severe skin damage with scales missing from their heads and bodies. Tragically I even saw a dead fish left to float in their tank, with other live fishes still in there.
Investigations are crucial to document and expose what is happening to animals but now we must take action to help these animals and prevent others from suffering the same fate. Please can you send a donation today to fuel the fight against aquariums? ([link removed])
Before I sign off, I will leave you with this message from the whistleblower. His aim by sharing his experiences with our charity was to help animals he sadly had to leave behind.
“My resultant, swift departure left me with thoughts for all the animals that were unable to do the same. The experience reinforced my beliefs that such organisations need far greater and more stringent governing, along with continuous assessment, in the hope that eventually all aquariums will be entirely phased out.”
This is why I ask for your help today. To help create this change and to build a world where animals live wild and free. Thank you.
For the animals,
Natasha Brown*

P.S. Right now, animals are suffering in aquariums. Many are driven mad by captivity, are sick and injured and some are even left to die. Please send a donation today to stop this and protect these animals. Thank you. ([link removed])
