Dear Friend,
In recent months, we’ve seen the consequences of “U.S. exceptionalism” unfold in Afghanistan, Haiti, as well as at the U.S./Mexico border. The sobering truth is U.S. exceptionalism is a complex set of ideas that sees the United States as exempt from and in some cases, superior to international accountability and historical realities. Activists across justice movements have named the real negative impacts of these myths and the racist actions and policies that support them. From political prisoners to border militarization, U.S. exceptionalism hides its undemocratic impacts while claiming a democratic vision.
Join us this Thursday, October 14th for the newest installment of our #RaceAnd The Movement Forward series –– #RaceAnd U.S. Exceptionalism: Organizing Against Empire
#RaceAnd U.S. Exceptionalism: Organizing Against Empire will be a online presentation that will provide a framework for those centering anti-militaristic and anti-imperialism in their racial justice analysis and organizing as well as those who are wanting to incorporate a global solidarity lens to their work here in the U.S.
Other themes that will be explored include:
- Framing of U.S. exceptionalism – perspectives by organizers from different vantage points of the U.S. human rights movements
- The concrete harms and visible cracks within the ideas and policies of U.S. exceptionalism
- Analysis of U.S. imperialism, and experiences of being a part of solidarity movements
