Dear John,
You’ve probably heard that the redistricting process is well underway, based on the results of the 2020 Census. The Trump Administration worked hard to interfere with the Census at every level, and now it’s up to us to hold elected officials accountable for fair redistricting. The 2022 midterms are coming, and they’ll be run on maps that are being drawn right now.
That’s why our community-based State Bridges partners are currently fighting to make sure that the redistricting process results in maps that are representative, and will allow their state legislatures to move forward on policies we all care about, including raising the minimum wage and expanding healthcare access.
How can our State Bridges partners protect voters in the redistricting process?
- Oversight and Accountability: Keeping the pressure on state legislators to ensure that the redistricting process is transparent and accountable.
- Public Participation and Commentary: Facilitating public comments and participation in redistricting hearings, particularly to ensure that the voices of those communities most impacted by redistricting are heard.
- Civic Engagement and Education: Educating their communities about why fair districts are important to everyday people’s lives, and how fair districts will mean a better future through better policy.
So far, the Sister District community has raised $152,806 for our State Bridges partners. That money will help them hire organizers to register and engage voters, raise awareness about what the state legislature is doing through advocacy campaigns and -- right now -- fight for fair districts.
But we aren’t done yet! We are just $8,361.90 away from our goal of $40,000 for our last four State Bridges partners in North Carolina, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. Can you pitch in to help us close the gap?
Onward,
The Sister District Team
