The oil spill off the California coast has harmed or killed dozens of fish and birds, including threatened snowy plovers.

And humpback whales are now migrating through poisonous oil in habitat that was just designated for protection.

So we've launched a lawsuit forcing the Biden administration to immediately address the offshore oil industry's dangerous threat to California's endangered species and habitat.

Offshore pipelines and platforms are ticking time bombs. The ruptured pipeline off the Orange County coastline poured up to 132,000 gallons of oil into the ocean.

The Talbert Marsh, a 25-acre-wetland along Huntington Beach where 80 species of birds rest during their long migrations south, was covered in oil.

After walking near Talbert Marsh, one of our scientists said the beach smelled like a gas station. His shoes were ruined, covered in tar. It will take years before we know the full damage to wildlife.

Our latest legal action shows how the government's existing Endangered Species Act analysis failed to predict or plan for an oil spill as big as the ongoing disaster in Southern California's San Pedro Bay.

The Center's team of scientists, lawyers and activists are on the ground across the country in this critical work to save our planet.

We filed a legal petition last week demanding that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers stop permitting fossil fuel projects such as pipelines, import and export terminals, refineries, and petrochemical plants.

We've sued the Biden administration for offering up 79 million acres of the Gulf of Mexico for oil and gas leasing.

We've seen firsthand the danger posed by offshore drilling in California — and campaigned in Louisiana's "Cancer Alley" to help stop the fossil-fuel dependent Formosa Plastics Complex.

And we're organizing a week of action this week at the White House calling on Biden to immediately stop fossil fuel project approvals and declare a national climate emergency.

This moment — oil on our beaches, our climate teetering, the extinction crisis more dire than ever — calls for urgency. We have no time to wait.
