Jack,
Happy National Coming Out Day! This month and every month, we celebrate the contributions and history of LGBTQ+ New Mexicans, and we will always celebrate this important holiday every single year.
No one should be discriminated against or live in fear because of who they are or who they love.
While I was the Bernalillo County Clerk in 2013, I knew the only way New Mexico would legalize same-sex marriage was if a lawsuit was filed in Court. So I asked Rose Griego and Kim Kiel, Miriam Rand and Ona Porter, A.D. Joplin and Greg Gomez, Therese Councilor and Tanya Struble, and Monica Leaming and Cecilia Taulbee to sue my office by intentionally denying them marriage licenses.
The lawsuit went all the way to the Supreme Court of New Mexico, and thus, same-sex marriage became legalized. I am so proud that, today, everyone in New Mexico is treated equally under the law when it comes to marriage.
The past few years have seen devastating legislation passed that is aimed at harming the LGBTQ+ community. That’s why it’s essential that New Mexico never passes legislation like that.
Thank you for standing with us as we fight for equality for the LGBTQ+ community. Will you pitch in $10 or more to make sure I can keep my seat and continue to ensure ensure a bright future for New Mexico?
