News From The Week Of October 21 – October 25, 2019

Friend:

It’s been a whirlwind week! Last Friday, Americans United received an award from the Freedom From Religion Foundation for our work combating the influence of religious fundamentalism in our government. I was honored to accept it on behalf of AU’s talented staff and our supporters all across the country.

This week also marked an important milestone: We are now less than a month away from the effective date of President Trump’s Denial of Care Rule. This rule would invite health care workers to refuse to treat patients based on their religious beliefs and with virtually no limits, putting all of our lives at risk.

It is a dangerous violation of church-state separation that AU has been working to stop since its inception. Right now, AU’s legal team has brought two separate lawsuits to block this rule from going into effect, working in partnership with the City of Baltimore, the County of Santa Clara, California, and partner organizations Lambda Legal and the Center for Reproductive Rights. There’s no doubt that we will be facing some tough challenges ahead, friend, but we are on it. I’m so glad to have you by our side.

With hope and determination,

Rachel K. Laser
President and CEO

The rule invites any health care worker – including doctors, nurses, paramedics, orderlies and receptionists – to deny care to any patient on the basis of the worker’s religious or moral beliefs.

Ben Carson Has No Idea What Separation Of Church And State Means:
For the government to take on the task of promoting 'godly principles,' it would first have to determine what’s godly and what’s not. It would have to elevate one version of faith over others and never be neutral on matters of theology.

Why A ‘Prayer Locker’ In A Kentucky Public School Had To Go:
Religious Right groups are fond of claiming that public schools are 'religion-free' zones, but that’s hardly the case. They are 'religious coercion-free' zones, and that’s as it should be.

Some Good News In The Battle To Maintain Access To Birth Control:
In a ruling this week, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals continued blocking Trump administration rules that would allow employers and universities to deny their employees and students health-insurance coverage for contraceptive care. It’s a win for reproductive rights, religious freedom and common sense.
