Friend,

In an early-morning tweet this week, Donald Trump, the most powerful racist in the world, called his impeachment inquiry a “lynching.”

Outrage erupted all over the country with civil rights leaders, historians, and everyday people on social media condemning the tweet as racist. But once again, the corporate media balked, too terrified of being accused of “liberal bias” to simply report the facts.

White supremacy is on the rise in America, threatening our democracy. Common Dreams is the independent, nonprofit news outlet with the courage to call out and contextualize racismand we're counting on you to stand with us.

Will you make a donation to Common Dreams and help support nonprofit, independent journalism that refuses to normalize racism?

Trump's tweet was a classic example of media manipulation.

It distracted from the growing mountain of evidence of his high crimes and misdemeanors. It grabbed headlines in outlet after outlet, repeating without qualification the absurd inversion of history, that he was the victim of racial violence.

And just as he knew they would, the media immediately did a search for every time a Democrat used the word “lynching” in the last quarter-century to normalize Trump's racism.

We need media outlets willing to call out racism—and lies, and high crimes, and corruption—when they see it.

And in a nation where over 4,000 black people were hunted and brutally murdered in the name of white supremacy, we need media to report critical context for Trump's deeply offensive remarks, not make it seem like “everyone does it.”

At a time when an outright racist autocrat occupies the most powerful office in the land, our relentless fact-driven coverage and commentary is more vital than ever.

Common Dreams refuses to normalize white supremacy. We will always call a lie a lie and racism what it is. But we can't do it without your help. Will you stand with us by making a donation to Common Dreams today?
