Join us for Indigenous Peoples' Week 2021

Hi John,

As we seek to restore wellness and sustainability in our tribal communities, food sovereignty becomes equally compelling for Indigenous peoples of the Great Lakes region.  We return to the traditional foods that kept us happy, strong, and resilient for centuries, and we find not only nourishment, but a strong sense of our cultural values and principles for “mino bimaadiziwin” (OJB: “this good way of life”)

We hope you will join us for two exciting virtual events this week (October 12 to 13) as we celebrate our food sovereignty. [[link removed]] Please note that tonight's event "Harvesting Our Heritage" has been cancelled. This will be an exciting week for Wisconsin Native Vote!

Not By Bread Alone: The Great Frybread Controversy

One of the popular staples at a community feast or at a traditional powwow, is frybread.  Everyone agrees it's loaded with calories, heavy in refined products, and generally, pretty unhealthy for us.  Then, why does it continue to be a mainstay?  Hear more about the origins of frybread from the talented trickster baker, Michael Laughing Fox Charette (Anishinaabe, Red Cliff) while he demonstrates the magic in his frybread making skills!

From The Earth: A Fall Harvest

Our sovereign right to hunt, fish, and gather in ceded territories continues, as guaranteed by our treaties-- and our methods to prepare the harvest have been perfected over the centuries. We've invited James Smith (Mohican, Menominee, Potawatomi), Sous Chef at Anello's to serve up roasted venison and autumn root veggies today.  Chef Smith will share his love for cooking and thoughts about community feasts as opportunities for healing and celebration.
