John,
Today is Indigenous Peoples' Day, and I am so proud to join all New Mexicans in honoring the culture, traditions and history of Indigenous peoples in our state and across the country.
As the first residents of the land we now call New Mexico, our tribes, pueblos, and nations have contributed so much to our state's beautiful multicultural identity. That's why, in 2019, I signed a law to officially establish today's holiday in honor of New Mexico's 23 sovereign Indigenous nations and take a step toward healing and growth.
Four years ago, I first shared my intention to run for Governor of New Mexico with the leaders of New Mexico’s tribes and pueblos because it is crucial that whoever leads our state respects the sovereignty and collaboration with tribal communities.
The strength of the relationship has proven critical in the past year and a half as we led our communities through the COVID-19 pandemic. As Indigenous peoples have made strides in recovering from the devastating pandemic, tribal leaders showed incredible resilience and strength in the face of challenging circumstances – demonstrating that we are all stronger when we look out for each other together.
Today and every day, I'm committed to partnering with leaders of sovereign Indigenous nations to uplift the health, well-being, and prosperity of my neighbors.
Happy Indigenous Peoples' Day.
