Today, the Arizona Democratic Party is celebrating Native American communities and culture.
|
Team, today is a day where we celebrate and honor Indigenous Peoples and their culture and history. Native history is inseparable from Arizona’s.
No matter the circumstances, we can still honor and celebrate Native culture by continuing to learn about Native history and by committing to lifting Native voices and addressing the inequities Native communities face.
So let me introduce two people who are tackling those inequities and raising Native voices: meet April Ignacio and Dylan Baca.
April Ignacio is Tohono O’odham, a mother of six, and works for her Nations’ tribal housing authority. She has conducted and continues her research of Tohono O’odham – Missing Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls; founded Indivisible Tohono; is the Chair of the Arizona State Democratic Party Native American Caucus; sits on the Arizona State Study Committee for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls; and much, much more.
Dylan Baca is a member of the White Mountain Apache tribe and through his cheii, he is Navajo. Dylan is a strong advocate for social change and is committed to eliminating social inequities; in Spring 2019, he started the Indigenous Peoples Initiative to provide accurate messaging about Indigenous Peoples’ to all people to ensure that educated policy decisions are made by lawmakers and other individuals in power; during the 2019 year, Dylan served as chairman of the Arizona Governor’s Youth Commission Human Trafficking Prevention Committee. He currently serves as a student advisor to Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction Kathy Hoffman, and as Board Member to the White Mountain Democrats.
So if you are able to enjoy a day off work today, think of people like April and Dylan, difference-makers for their Nations, for Arizona, and for America as well.
And from all of us at the Arizona Democratic Party, Happy Indigenous Peoples’ Day!
In solidarity,
Rachel Hood
