Hi,
Another day, another oil spill. Every time you
look at the news it feels like an oil pipeline disaster is being
reported. This time it’s in Southern California.
Over 140,000 gallons of crude oil have been spilled into the
Pacific Ocean whose oil sheen is visible for miles. The impact to
wildlife will be catastrophic, affecting birds, whales, dolphins, and
other sea creatures who will perish from being drenched in oil and
breathing in the toxic fumes. Beaches could remain closed for weeks if
not months.
This spill is a stark reminder of the threat offshore
drilling presents to the Southern California coastline and its ocean
economy. We can’t let history keep on repeating itself. We
have it in our power to stop new drilling activity along the
coast.
With the American Coasts and Oceans Protection
Act1 introduced by Rep. Mike Levin we can tell
Congress to prohibit the Department of the Interior from issuing
leases for the exploration, development, or production of oil or
natural gas along the coastline.
California has been the site of several large oil spills in recent
history. It's time that we put the environment and the coast’s
unique way of life ahead of the fossil fuel companies seeking to
profit from pollution.
Send a message to your member of Congress today and
ask them to support H.R. 3053 — not just for California,
but for people from coast-to-coast who want to protect cherished
marine life for generations to come.
In solidarity,
Kathleen Rogers President
