John -- It was October 11, 1992. I was in Washington D.C. for the annual displaying of the AIDS Quilt and organizing for the upcoming National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay rights.

As I stood there on the National Mall, surrounded by people grieving the partners and friends they had lost to AIDS, it hit me like a freight train.

I could no longer deny who I was.

Surrounded by such grief, I knew that life is too short not to live free and be your full, authentic self. That day I told my husband I wanted a divorce.

Today on National Coming Out Day, I want to affirm all of my peers in the Queer community who may not be ready to step out of the closet. You will do what is right for you, in your own time. You are still loved, and you are still valid exactly as you are.

For 29 years I’ve had the honor to work for Queer liberation across the nation. From helping to organize national marches to fighting same-sex marriage bans, helping Queer folks tell their stories and organizing to help LGBTQIA+ candidates win elections.

I’m sharing my story with you all today [[link removed]] in the hopes it will bring comfort to those who are still struggling with discrimination and bigotry for who they are, and to help our allies understand that the struggle for Queer liberation continues to this day.

On this National Coming Out Day, as a fresh wave of attacks against our Trans siblings unfolds across the nation, let us recommit to equality by fighting to pass the Equal Rights Amendment.

And in the words of the great Harvey Milk, remember that you gotta give ‘em hope.

Since 2016 BNC has led the way in advancing popular policies like Medicare for All, the Green New Deal, and Abolishing ICE. In 2018 we recruited and elected AOC. In 2020, we elected Cori Bush and Jamaal Bowman, and we helped Rashida Tlaib win a tough re-election fight.
We are building yet another strong slate of progressives for 2022. Pitch in today and join us as we take over Congress and return power to the people.
