Friend,
Today is Indigenous People’s Day—an opportunity to celebrate and honor Indigenous resistance.
A new report from Indigenous Environmental Network found that Indigenous resistance has stopped or delayed greenhouse gas pollution equivalent to at least 1/4 of annual U.S. and Canadian emissions. Thank you, Water Protectors and land defenders!
Recently, I got to meet with and hear firsthand from Indigenous Water Protectors who are protesting construction of Minnesota’s Line 3 pipeline. The project would violate Indigenous treaty rights and risk dangerous spills of dirty tar sands.
In addition, Enbridge Energy—the corporation behind Line 3—is now paying the local police to shoot at and abuse protestors. Police have even been using torture tactics, which have led to permanent physical harm.
Please add your name now to call on President Biden to stop the dangerous Line 3 Pipeline, respect Indigenous treaties and rights, and protect protestors from torture at the hands of police.
On my recent trip to Minnesota with other members of Congress, I shared my experiences in Michigan regarding Enbridge, where this Canadian multinational corporation is responsible for the worst inland oil spill in American history.
We met with courageous, resilient, and wise Water Protectors and Indigenous leaders to discuss the impacts of the pipeline—including its violations of tribal sovereignty.
Line 3 would cross 200 bodies of water, passing through sacred sites and areas where Indigenous people hunt, fish, and gather wild rice. The pipeline would transport tar sands, the dirtiest fossil fuel, through sensitive habitats and Indigenous territories without their consent.
Already, Enbridge has spilled drilling chemicals into rivers and lakes during Line 3’s construction. It’s a ticking time bomb: It’s not a question of whether there will be devastating oil spills, but when.
The project hasn’t even received an Environmental Impact Statement to evaluate its environmental risks and violations of treaty rights! And we know that our climate cannot afford any more fossil fuel extraction projects; we must keep fossil fuels in the ground.
We need your help calling on President Biden to stop this dangerous project, including the corporate-funded, state-sanctioned torture of protestors. This must stop now: The pipeline. The police brutality. All of it. And President Biden can do it with the stroke of a pen.
Sign the petition calling on President Biden to shut down the Line 3 Pipeline and order the Department of Justice to stop local police from using unconscionable torture tactics against Water Protectors.
Thank you. Let’s honor Indigenous rights today and every day.
In solidarity,
Rashida
