Dear John:

PFLAG National offices are closed today, as we honor Indigenous Peoples’ Day. In case you missed it, last Friday President Biden became the first president to honor this important day, when we "...celebrate the invaluable contributions and resilience of Indigenous peoples, recognize their inherent sovereignty, and commit to honoring the Federal Government’s trust and treaty obligations to Tribal Nations."

A Special Screening Invitation

Join us for a private virtual screening of CURED

We are pleased to invite you to a private virtual screening of the award-winning new documentary CURED, which highlights a pivotal but little-known moment in LGBTQ history, when activists rose up to challenge a formidable institution — and won! You can sign up to screen the feature-length director's cut of CURED online from October 13-October 20. (We'll also have the filmmaker as this week's guest on Something to Talk About Live...learn more below).

We are thrilled to partner with our friends at AARP and the filmmakers for this special event, which comes just days after CURED’s national broadcast premiere October 11th on PBS.

Register now for this exciting free event!

Support

National Coming Out Day

Today is National Coming Out Day. For many, it's a celebration of sharing their authentic and beautiful identity, with themselves and their loved ones. For others, it's a day to celebrate their LGBTQ+ loved ones and create safe space for them to share that personal news. Coming out is a personal decision, and the only one who can or should make the choice to come out is the person whose information it is to share.

PFLAG is here for LGBTQ+ people, and for parents and families, offering support to everyone on how to make the coming-out experience safe, secure, and special.

Visit pflag.org/comingout for a wide variety of coming-out resources. Not finding the help you need? Contact us and we'll help you find what you're looking for.

Education

Three Steps to Being There for Loved Ones Who are Coming Out

  1. Learn: Check out the list of books available at pflag.org/comingoutbooks to learn more about the diversity of coming out and disclosure experiences for people who identify as LGBTQ+ and their loved ones.
  2. Watch: PFLAG Academy Online on-demand includes a great session on coming out, "When Someone Comes Out: A PFLAGers Guide to Demonstrating Support and Acceptance." Also, check out our two short videos--made in collaboration with our friends at Verizon--which demonstrate different coming out experiences: Pride and Love Calls Back.
  3. Share: Use social media to share PFLAG publications or how to find a local PFLAG chapter. Also, be sure to follow us on our PFLAG National channels: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn, and now on TikTok, too!

Advocacy

Supercharge Your Advocacy Work at We Are the Change

We Are the Change: The 2021 PFLAG National Convention is coming in less than two weeks, and it's a great opportunity to expand your learning in support of important PFLAG advocacy work. We'll have two critical briefings:

  • State Advocacy Briefing, featuring powerful leaders Rachel Hill [Equality Texas]; Nadine Smith [Equality Florida]; Troy Stevenson [The Trevor Project]; and JM Triplett III [Equality Ohio].
  • Federal Policy Briefing: moderated by PFLAG National's Diego M. Sanchez, and featuring national leaders Liz Seaton [National LGBTQ Task Force]; Dylan Waguespack [True Colors United]; Bonnie Washick [GLSEN]; and Victoria Kirby York [National Black Justice Coalition].

We'll also have a great session on anti-trans rhetoric, Gender-Critical Rhetoric: The Language Fueling the Anti-Trans Fire, which will absolutely help you make a difference not just in your advocacy work, but in providing support to parents whose kids are newly out as transgender or nonbinary.

This is a national convention you won't want to miss! Register now at pflag.org/wearethechange.
