Cities Live with Regret as Defund the Police Sees Natural Consequences

From the story: In cities across America, police departments are getting their money back. From New York to Los Angeles, departments that saw their funding targeted amid nationwide protests over the killing of George Floyd last year have watched as local leaders voted for increases in police spending, with an additional $200 million allocated to the New York Police Department and a 3 percent boost given to the Los Angeles force (New York Times). A look at the horrible violent crime statistics (Heritage). From another story: Cut police funding, and you get less policing. That’s what Austin residents are learning the hard way this month as law enforcement tries to triage its emergency response amid a severe staffing shortage. Beginning this month, the Austin Police Department has asked the public not to call 911 for “non-emergency situations” if “there is no immediate threat to life or property,” “where crimes are no longer in progress,” and “when the suspect(s) are no longer on scene or in sight.” The directive applies to burglaries, thefts, prostitution, vandalism, and several other crimes. The police urged victims and witnesses to call 311 or file a report online instead (WSJ).

California Governor Signs Law Forcing Stores to Have Gender-Neutral Section

From the story: Large department stores must now display products like toys and toothbrushes in gender-neutral ways – a win for LGBT advocates who say the pink and blue hues of traditional marketing methods pressure children to conform to gender stereotypes. The new law, however, does not completely outlaw traditional boys and girls sections at department stores. Instead it says large stores must also have a gender neutral section to display ‘a reasonable selection’ of items ‘regardless of whether they have been traditionally marketed for either girls or for boys’ (Daily Mail).  Another story notes “The initiative was the third time that Democrats in the state Legislature have tried to pass this law, with similar bills failing in 2019 and 2020” (Townhall).
