Senator Joe Manchin cannot be allowed to control the Senate.

Dear Friend,

In the middle of a congressional dumpster fire, Senator Joe Manchin just upped his demands for passing President Biden's Build Back Better agenda.

He said that Democrats can choose just one of the agenda’s family assistance programs to fund—but he won’t allow them all to pass.1

Enough is enough. Senate leadership needs to stop letting Manchin run the show. Passing the Build Back Better package can help people, rather than corporations. But Manchin cares more for his coal earnings and industry donors than his constituents, and he must not be allowed to stymie Biden’s agenda.

We need to get the spotlight back on the programs that the legislation encompasses, like climate action, Medicare expansion, and paid family leave. And we need to rally grassroots pressure on Congress to stand up to Manchin and all the corporate Democrats who are siding more with Mitch McConnell than the people they’re supposed to represent. It’s an ambitious goal, but this is what Demand Progress is built for, and we’re ready for a long fight—with your help.

Manchin is asking Congress to throw out either paid family leave, childcare subsidies, or an expanded child tax credit—all critical programs for lifting families out of poverty and supporting those who have been struggling during the pandemic economy.2

Yet he is still fighting to keep oil and gas subsidies, which cost hundreds of billions of dollars.3

It’s bad enough that Mitch McConnell is filibustering legislation at every turn. It’s worse that members of Biden’s own party are stopping his agenda—the agenda that Biden and those Democrats were elected to enact.

The media is calling these Democrats “moderates,” but that’s not accurate. They’re corporate Democrats, in the pockets of Big Oil, Big Tech, and the rest of Big Business, who fund their campaigns in order to keep America industry friendly. But that’s not the story that’s being told.

That’s why it’s critical that we ramp up our campaign to call out these corporate Democrats for letting their agendas be driven by industry and letting millions of people suffer in the meantime. And with the climate crisis, voter suppression running rampant, and the pandemic still raging, we have no time to waste.

Demand Progress members have sent more than 90,000 messages to Congress, urging them to pass a bold progressive agenda and not let Manchin, Kyrsten Sinema, or anyone else stop them. We need to ensure that we continue to have an impact as key votes come up in the coming months. Will you become a monthly donor today?
